Em bom ritmo! - In a good pace!

Acabámos de falar com a Mariana que nos diz que o Miguel está super animado e cheio de vontade! Tanta que só vai se alimentar quando quiser, só pensa é em continuar a nadar!

Até agora já fizeram cerca de 2 milhas - cerca de 3,5 Km - em mais ou menos 40 minutos de prova, bom ritmo!

We've just got the news from Mariana that Miguel is with a very high spirit and so motivated that he's not even thinking about his "food", just focused on his pace!

He already did arround 2 miles in 40 minutes, wich is very good!

Don't forget that you can follow Miguel on http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ The boat that follows him is a pink "arrow" called Columba Uno.

Eram cerca das 10:58h e o Miguel já dava as primeiras braçadas em direcção a África!

São agora 10:50h da manhã e o Miguel já está todo untado com as suas vaselinas, a caminho da praia de onde ele se atirará à água! Tudo parece estar pronto e daqui a nada a Mariana já nos vai dizer a hora certa das primeiras braçadas do nosso Miguel!

Mais uma vez a TVI está no local a acompanhar a travessia! Em princípio só amanhã é que devem aparecer todas as imagens nos telejornais.

It's now 10:50 am (GMT) and Miguel is already greased and on the way to beach where he will start! Everything seams to be ok to go and in a bit Mariana will tell us the exact time of Miguels first stoke!

Once again TVI, one of the national TV open channels, will be with Miguel and tomorrow we may see all the images on TV.

Tudo a fazer figas para amanhã - cross fingers for tomorrow

Depois do adiamento de hoje estamos a fazer força e figas e a rezar a todos os santos que se avance com a travessia amanhã. Ainda por cima aí poderemos contar com a companhia de uma equipa da TVI que deverão chegar daqui a umas horas e ficam aqui no Hostal Alameda connosco. Para além disso amanhã o Pedro Brandão, meu treinador, terá de voltar para Lisboa. Ficar cá sozinhos e longe dos nossos filhos não apetece de facto nada!

Sinto-me cheio de vontade e de força. O que vale é que depois da experiência da Mancha e até da Travessia da Madeira às Desertas, consigo não desanimar demais com este compasso de espera. Há que ter paciencia e fé que tudo correrá bem quando for altura para isso.

Hoje na missa fizeram uma oração especial em memória dos imigrantes ilegais que morrem a tentar atravessar o Estreito. Os meus pensamentos também estão com estas pessoas que movidas por um desespero tão grande se lançam ao mar.

Following todays postponement we are all crossing our fingers, vibing and praying for a decent opportunity to swim tomorrow. What's more we will be able to count on the company of a news crew from TVI (they should be arriving soon and will stay here at the Hostal Alameda with us). On Tuesday my coach, Pedro Brandão, will have to be back at work in Lisbon and the idea of having to hang around here, far away from the kids, for an indefinite period is not something I want to contemplate!

I am feeling strong and really raring to go. At least my experience last year and even the Madeira - Desertas crossing have taught me to not feel disheartened by the need to wait, it's a question of patience and faith that the best time for the crossing will come and I will be ready for it.

At Mass today there was a special prayer in memory of the illegal immigrants who lose their life trying to cross the Straits. My thoughts go out to these people who driven by desperation launch themselves into the sea.

Em terra - Grounded

Tal é a natureza deste desporto. Hoje quando fomos ter com o Rafael, ele fez-nos logo uma careta e explicou que o vento estava mais forte e para além disso havia uma densa neblina na costa Marroquina. Esperámos a hora que ele pediu e confirmou-se que a travessia fica adiada. Talvez amanhã? Tudo indica que sim mas só em cima da hora é que se pode confirmar.

Resta-nos então descanso, calma e animo. E quem sabe um pouco de turismo.

An alternative for getting across the Strait

This is the nature of the beast - today when we met with Rafael he grimaced and explained that the increased wind and dense fog on the Morroccan coastline were making a swim today unlikely. Still we hung around for an hour or so to see if the conditions improved but no luck, and the crossing has been put off for today. We are on standby for tomorrow, but only tomorrow will we know whether the conditions are more favorable. It's a waiting game so now we sit, and rest, practice our patience and keep up our spirits.

Talvez amanhã - Maybe tomorrow...

Bom, parece que afinal as condições não ajudaram, por isso a travessia fica marcada para a mesma hora amanhã (11h da manhã).

Well it appears that the weather didn't help a lot today so the crossing is rescheduled for the same hour tomorrow.

Vento e neblina inesperados - Unexpected wind and fog...

11 horas da manhã.
Este deveria ser o post que anunciava que o Miguel se tinha atirado à água para só parar em África mas, por causa do vento que se levantou e de uma neblina do lado marroquino, fica adiada a travessia... Na melhor das hipóteses é só um atraso, estando o Miguel à espera até ao meio dia, caso contrário, fica para amanhã.
Mas continuem ligados e atentos que entretanto vamos dando mais informações!

This should be the post to announce that Miguel was already in the water, swimming towards Africa but, due to the rise of wind and fog on the maroccan side, the crossing is to be delayed, hopefully just an hour, for Miguel is waiting up to mid day to see if the conditions improve, otherwise tomorrow will be the day.
But stay tunned for we'll be posting all the informations!
