(English translation below - the Portuguese are so clever they don't need one!!)

Portuguese athlete makes the fastest time of the year and is close to the world record

Ceuta, 15th of July (EFE) - Miguel Horta e Costa, expert portuguese swimmer, has set the fastest time of the year for the open water swim across the Strait of Gibraltar and was close to beating the world record for swimming this distance without a neoprene suit.
According to the information supplied by the Asociación de Cruce a Nado del Estrecho de Gibraltar (ACNEG), the portuguese swimmer carried out his swim between Tarifa (Cadiz) and Punta Almansa, on the Morroccan coast.
This swimmer, who participated in the Olympic Games in Barcelona and who last year swam the English Channel in 9hours and 30minutes, took 3 hours and 32 minutes to cover the distance between the Spanish and Morroccan coasts.
The swimmer was close to beating the record for the crossing of the Strait, without neoprene, held by the Czech swimmer David Cech, of 2 hours and 38 minutes, as he bettered all the intermediate times of the crossing.

However when the Portuguese Swimmer was barely two miles from the end of his crossing he as faced with a strong current and the rising wind over this final stage ended his chance of setting a new world record.

EFE
ACNEG has pointed out that there are no new swims forecast for the following week. This will be the first halt of the season. Yesterday the local swimmers Fernando Piñero and Antonio Gil completed the crossing in 3 hours and 7 minutes wearing neoprene suits.

Having read this I think I might just go back and try again!! :)

This post could only begin with a huge thank you to all those who once again followed my adventure via the blog. Only now have I had a chance to skim through your comments which fill me with the desire to carry on with greater swims! I can't wait to read them more calmly so as to be transported back to yesterday's swim and all the emotions of that day.
After a very exciting monday, Tuesday already dawned with us back on Portuguese territory.
Following the swim we returned to the ACNEG offices where after a lengthy struggle with a reluctant computer system we managed to extract my Swim Certificate and the chart of my course. With these delays we only managed o leave Traifa after 9pm but we still planned to come straight home without making any unnecessary stops. After 7 hours on the road we fell into bed at 4.30am this morning.
There should be a report on tonight's 8pm news on TVI (there was a lengthy piece on today's lunchtime news) and meanwhile we will post the pics from the swim later this evening... and who knows if we won't give you a sneek peek at what may be next on the cards! Whatever could it be???

Com o fantástico tempo de 3h 32m 30s!!!

Arrived!!!
Oficial time: 3 hours 32 minutes 30 seconds

(imagem com a rota do Miguel - image with Miguels course)

2 km!!!

Quase a chegar!!! Só faltam 2Km!!! E... só com pouco mais de 2h e meia!!!

Almost there!!! It's just 2Km more!!! And... only with little more than 2 and a half hours!!!

Encontros imediatos - Close encouters

With little more than 2 hours, Miguel is already at less than 5 km from the moroccan shore!!!
Meanwhile some pilot whales changed their course just to give their support to our champion! Even the whales recognize him...
